Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering constitutes one of the basic branches of Engineering. The department has full compliment of well-qualified teachers dedicated to their task. This Department imparts instructions and training to the students of all branches in Graphics and Basic Workshop Practice. The students of Mechanical engineering undergo a rigorous training in machine shop, Carpentry, Fitting and Forging. Bharath Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML) extends its facility to our students imparting machine shop practice and Project Work. Recent Additions to the Labs include a Low Velocity Wind Tunnel and a Flow Visualization Setup. University High Version of Ansys FEM Package is extensively used for teaching, demonstration and solutions of Design problems. The Department arranges periodical seminars and workshops in the emerging areas and special training courses in ACAD, Pro-E etc. The Lab facilities are open to students even after the working hours if needed and students are encouraged to use them.

Mechanical Labs

Metrology and Instrumentation Lab

Quality plays an important role in industries where the engineers need to know the usage of precision measuring instruments. In this lab students study the various quality control techniques adopted in industries using comparators, gauges etc. They also study the various cutting forces induced during machining operations using precision measuring equipments.

Material Testing Lab

Here the students learn the various methods of destructive and Non-destructive testing and study the mechanical properties of various materials by conducting experiments using Universal testing machine, Hardness testers, Torsion testing machine etc. In this lab the students study the Microstructures of different materials and their properties. An analysis of these properties helps in design and production of various components in mechanical industries.

CAD CAM Lab

In today's technological world every engineer needs to know the design and analysis of various mechanical components using latest computer softwares. In this lab the students learn the drafting techniques using the latest design software of AutoCAD. Analysis packages like Ansys are used to study the various stresses induced in components subjected to loading. Using C Graphics students are taught to draw various models. In Computer Aided Machining lab (CAM) students perform machining operations like turning and milling by using computer programs.

Basic Workshop Lab

Students of all branches are introduced the basics of workshop where they practice the various trades like Fitting, Welding, Sheet metal and Carpentry. In the process they learn the usage of various measuring instruments like callipers, micrometers, gauges etc. and also learn to handle various tools like vices, files, chisels, hammers, tongs, welding equipments etc.

Fluid Mechanics and Machines Lab

Now-a-days in the power plants, automobile industries and other mechanical industries they are finding various methods to use hydraulic energy effectively for which the properties and the various principles of hydraulics are very much essential . In this lab, students conduct the experimental verification of various hydraulic principles. They also study the performance characteristics of different hydraulic machineries like turbines, pumps etc.

I C Engines Lab

Internal combustion engines play an important role in automobile and power plant industries. Here students study the performance characteristics of various internal combustion engines. They also study the working performance of machines like Compressors, Blowers etc. They evaluate the different properties of fuels and lubricants using viscometers and Cleave lands open cup apparatus etc.

Foundry & Forging Lab

In this lab students learn the various moulding techniques used for the production of castings of different shapes and dimensions. They also study about the different properties of moulding sand by conducting various tests using Universal sand testing machine, Permeability apparatus, Clay washer, Sieve shaker, Moisture teller etc. In the forging section students are trained to prepare various models of steel by using different forging tools and furnaces.

Design Lab

Design of any component in the process of manufacturing is the most important step. For designing any component it is required to know the various properties of the material which is used for the manufacture of the component. Here the students study the mechanical properties of a given material when subjected to different loads using apparatus like Strain Gauge Rosettes, Governors, Photo elastic bench, Journal bearing test rig etc.

Heat Transfer Lab

We know that the heat is transferred from one body to the other body by any one of the three modes such as Conduction, Convection or Radiation. In this lab students conduct experimental analysis on the three modes of heat transfer using various heat transfer equipments such as Heat Exchangers, Natural convection apparatus, Forced convection apparatus etc. The experimental results obtained with the above apparatus are verified using standard correlations.
